Joint partnership agreement signed by JERA and ADNOC for collaboration in the realm of clean hydrogen and ammonia production sectors.
JERA and ADNOC Join Forces to Lead Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia Production
A significant step towards a greener future has been taken with the Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) signed between JERA and ADNOC on July 19, 2023. This agreement, a continuation of the good collaboration between the two entities, focuses on cooperation in the clean hydrogen and ammonia fields.
The SCA aims to establish scalable clean hydrogen and ammonia production with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) integration by 2031. This ambitious goal is part of a broader effort by Japan to decarbonize power generation and aligns with ADNOC’s decarbonization plans, as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) strives to become one of the leading producers of clean hydrogen by 2031.
JERA, a major Japanese energy player, has committed to achieving "JERA Zero CO Emissions 2050". To this end, they will work with leading companies in Japan and overseas to establish and expand supply chains for hydrogen and ammonia. This partnership with ADNOC is a significant stride in this direction.
ADNOC is expected to play a crucial role in achieving the UAE's target of becoming a leading producer of clean hydrogen. Their expertise in natural resources, combined with JERA's role in the energy sector, will advance clean hydrogen and ammonia production technologies and CCS solutions.
The collaboration supports joint investment and operation in projects focused on low-emission ammonia production, such as a $4 billion project in Louisiana. It also includes the integration of CCS technology in demonstration projects, essential for reducing the carbon footprint of hydrogen and ammonia production.
Demonstration and commissioning activities for CCS-related projects have already begun, with the goal of commercial-scale production and supply of clean hydrogen and ammonia by 2031. This will enable new clean energy exports to markets like Japan, where hydrogen demand is growing rapidly.
The SCA is a result of years of collaboration and successful LNG transactions between the two entities. It reinforces the collaboration between ADNOC and JERA towards a value chain in the clean hydrogen and ammonia fields, and contributes to the expansion of business opportunities for both companies.
This partnership is a testament to the growing global effort to transition to clean energy sources. As both JERA and ADNOC work towards their shared goal, they will contribute to global decarbonization and energy solutions, setting an example for other companies to follow.
- The cooperation in the clean hydrogen and ammonia fields between JERA and ADNOC, as part of their Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA), aligns with the renewable-energy focus of the finance sector, as both companies aim to invest in low-emission ammonia production.
- The integration of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology in demonstration projects, essential for reducing the carbon footprint of hydrogen and ammonia production, is a significant step for the industry, especially considering JERA's commitment to achieving "JERA Zero CO Emissions 2050".
- The partnership between JERA and ADNOC in clean hydrogen and ammonia production, with a goal of scaling production by 2031, showcases the potential for business growth in the renewable-energy sector, contributing to Japan's decarbonization plans and the UAE's aim to become a leading producer of clean hydrogen.
