Unfilled Apprenticeships Persist in Saxony's Training Market

In Saxony, approximately 10,000 apprenticeship positions remain vacant. According to the regional office of the Federal Employment Agency, 16,500 apprenticeship positions were initially reported to Saxon companies at the onset of the training year in October. This means that nearly 60 percent of the reported positions remain unfilled.

Steffen Leonhardi, deputy head of the Saxony regional office of the Federal Employment Agency, emphasized the need to link undecided young people with searching companies. He highlighted that there is approximately one reported apprenticeship position for every registered applicant in Saxony.

The most apprenticeship positions reported thus far are for retail salespeople, salespeople, and mechatronics engineers.

To bridge the gap between available apprenticeship positions and candidates, the Federal Employment Agency's regional office in Saxony is implementing initiatives. These include vocational language courses designed to enhance German language skills, which are crucial for successful apprenticeship participation. These courses, arranged by the Federal Agency of Migration and Refugees, deliver job-related language training tailored to various proficiency levels, from A2 to C1. Improved language competence increases the employability and apprenticeship readiness of candidates.
