Japan's Newest Wind Farm, Ishikari Bay New Port, Begins Powering Hokkaido
A new wind farm, the 112 MW Ishikari Bay New Port, has begun supplying news to Hokkaido. The project is jointly operated by JERA, Green Power Investment Corporation, Hokkaido Electric, and Tohoku Electric. It features 14 turbines and a battery storage system.
The wind farm, comprising 14 Siemens Gamesa turbines each with an 8 MW capacity, started commercial operation on 1 January 2024. It supplies electricity to the Hokkaido Electric Power Network.
In a strategic move, JERA has transferred some of its ownership interests in the project to Hokkaido Tohoku Wind Power, an investment company formed by Hokkaido Electric Power and Tohoku Electric Power. This transfer took place on 30 September 2021.
The Ishikari Bay New Port wind farm, now jointly operated, contributes to Japan's renewable energy goals. Its 180 MWh battery storage system enhances grid stability and reliability.
