Jan Wachtel Named New Burda Media CEO as Philipp Welte Moves to Supervisory Board
Burda Media has announced a significant leadership change. Jan Wachtel will take over as the new CEO, succeeding Philipp Welte, who will join the supervisory board. The appointment comes as the company looks to navigate industry changes and maintain its profitability.
Wachtel brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has held prominent positions at media giants like Axel Springer and Bauer Media. His appointment as CEO of Burda Media, effective January 1, 2026, will see him oversee around 5,500 employees across 16 countries. Wachtel will be responsible for Burda's diverse portfolio, including Burda Verlag, Burda Forward, Burda Druck, Burda Broadcast, and international subsidiaries.
Hubert Burda, the company's owner, praised Welte's contributions to Burda's publishing business, which generated approximately 1.37 billion euros in revenue in 2024. Welte's departure from his operational role marks the end of an era, but his move to the supervisory board ensures his continued involvement in the company's future.
Jan Wachtel's appointment as CEO of Burda Media is a testament to his impressive track record in leading media houses. With his strong leadership, Burda Media is confident in its ability to adapt to industry changes and continue its success. The company's established brands and experienced management team, now led by Wachtel, will drive its future development.
