Controversy Surrounds Redevelopment of Pirelli 35 as Catella Faces Corruption Allegations

Amidst the ongoing redevelopment of the ex Pirellino building, now known as Pirelli 35, in Milan, controversy has arisen due to the criticism levelled by Manfredi Catella, the founder and CEO of Coima Sgr. Catella has labeled the redevelopment project as a "biggest rip-off."

However, Catella himself is currently under house arrest, charged with corruption in an urban planning investigation. The Milan Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating him for inducing someone to unduly give or promise benefits to the former president of the municipal Landscape Commission, Giuseppe Marinoni.

Despite these allegations, Catella maintains that the regular monthly meetings he has with Councilor Tancredi and Malangone, directors of Palazzo Marino, regarding the Pirellino project, are not an issue.

In a surprising turn of events, it has been revealed that the consultancy contracts were spread across several small contracts on Via Messina. The interrogation discusses alleged corruption in consultancy invoices totalling €138,000.

Adding to the controversy, the Municipality imposed a restriction on the building for a portion of Social Housing two months after the deed. Catella opposes this restriction, as it was not part of the original agreement, as the building was purchased with free destination.

The dispute between Coima Sgr and the Municipality of Milan arose after Coima's purchase of the building. Manfredi Catella has expressed concern about not paying people on the Landscape Commission.

However, it is important to note that the judge does not recognize this charge on a legal basis.

In the midst of these allegations, the Pirellino redevelopment project does not currently have a permit. The architectural project, commissioned by COIMA, is being carried out by Architects Park Associati and Snøhetta. The redevelopment aims at environmental sustainability and enhanced public accessibility, transforming the 1960s office block into an energy-efficient, green, and permeable urban landmark.

The project aligns with smart city and sustainability goals emphasized in Milan's urban plans for 2025, aiming to reconnect parts of the city and serve as a cultural hub, hosting tenants like Adidas and Condé Nast.

Despite the ongoing controversy, the redevelopment of Pirelli 35 is progressing. However, the lack of credible or up-to-date information on any administrative disputes or corruption allegations connected with this redevelopment suggests that there are no currently public or prominent disputes or allegations connected with this project or its relationship with Milan municipality.
