Chinese automaker Nio has entered the electric SUV market with its latest offering, the Onvo L90. Officially launched on July 31, 2025, the Onvo L90 has already made a significant impact, becoming the third-best-selling large SUV in China within the first 72 hours of sales [1][5].

Key Specifications and Features

The Onvo L90 boasts a starting price of RMB 265,800 (approximately $36,860) with the battery pack included, or RMB 179,800 with the BaaS (Battery as a Service) option [1][2]. The SUV offers two layout variants: a 2+2+3 configuration and a 2+2+2 layout, catering to families in need of ample seating [2].

In terms of performance, the AWD version delivers up to 440 kW of power, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The two-wheel-drive version boasts class-leading energy efficiency, with a range of up to 605 kilometers and consuming only 14.5 kWh per 100 kilometers [3].

Safety is a top priority for the Onvo L90. The vehicle features a three-compartment steel-aluminum hybrid body, with aluminum alloy and high-strength steel accounting for 84% of its structure. It has a high torsional stiffness of 38,150 N·m/Deg, and safety features include nine airbags and passing 62 crash tests that exceed industry standards [2].

Redefining the Category

Nio positions the Onvo L90 as a flagship, premium large SUV redefining the category through comprehensive safety, spaciousness, comfort, energy efficiency, and advanced all-scenario intelligence [2]. The vehicle's launch and production ramp-up are part of Nio’s strategy to improve profitability, with the Onvo L90 described by CEO William Li as a turning point for the company’s profitability expected in Q4 2025 [4].

The Onvo L90 joins Nio's product lineup alongside its other models within the Onvo sub-brand (specifically the L60 and L80), targeting family users looking for large, premium electric SUVs [4].

Market Response

With its competitive pricing, advanced safety features, high power and efficiency, and large interior space, the Onvo L90 has received a strong initial market reception. Around 600 units of the Onvo L90 are available for test drives at Onvo stores across China [2].
