International automaker BYD debuts in Pakistan, introduces 3 vehicle models, mulls over local manufacturing facility.
Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has announced its entry into the Pakistani market, with plans to begin sales of its vehicles in the fourth quarter of this year. The company's general manager of the Asia Pacific automotive sales division, Liu X (@ueliang), shared that BYD will bring its latest technology and products to Pakistan to fuel the adoption of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs).
BYD's planned assembly plant will be located near Karachi's Port Qasim. The plant will be a joint venture between BYD and Mega Motors, a subsidiary of Hub Power. Exact details of the plant are still under discussion. According to a Bloomberg report on August 15, BYD will set up showrooms in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.
On August 17, BYD held a brand launch event in Lahore and introduced three models: the Atto 3, Seal EV, and Sealon 6. The Atto 3 is known as the Yuan Plus in China, and the Sealion 6 is known as the Song Plus DM-i. The Seal EV is a sedan, and the other two models are SUVs (sport utility vehicles).
Pakistan's Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb was in attendance at the brand launch. BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has entered the Pakistani passenger car market, marking a significant step for the company.
Hub Power announced in late June that BYD planned to enter Pakistan to sell EVs. This announcement followed the introduction of BYD's first all-electric buses to Pakistan in April 2021. BYD ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, further emphasising its commitment to NEVs.
In July, BYD sold 342,383 NEVs, including 340,799 passenger NEVs and 1,584 commercial NEVs. The company sold 30,014 NEVs in overseas markets in the same month. BYD's sales figures highlight its global success in the NEV market.
As BYD prepares to enter the Pakistani market, the assembly plant in Karachi is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026. With the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions, BYD's entry into Pakistan is poised to contribute significantly to the country's transition towards a greener future.
