Insurance firm in Japan to Introduce Insurance Dependent on Bear Reduction Strategies
In response to the growing number of incidents involving wild bears attacking people and damaging properties, Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co. has introduced a new insurance policy specifically designed for local governments. This policy, set to take effect in September 2025, will cover property damage caused by bullets fired during wild bear extermination operations.
The revised wildlife protection and management law, which permits local governments to use firearms at their discretion to cull dangerous wild animals in residential neighborhoods, has necessitated this innovative insurance product. The law aims to address the increasing instances of wild bears appearing in human habitats.
The insurance policy, which covers up to ¥30 million in compensation paid by local governments for damages to buildings, vehicles, and other properties, does not cover human injuries resulting from such bullets. The premium for this policy will be calculated individually for each local government based on the number of sightings of bears, boars, and other wild animals in their areas.
This move is intended to help local governments manage the financial risks associated with culling operations while addressing safety concerns in communities. The policy, which is related to the use of firearms by local governments to cull dangerous wild animals, will be sold by Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co.
