Industrial leader issues warning of potential industry erosion

In an interview with the Rheinische Post (Saturday edition), Yasmin Fahimi, the chair of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), voiced her concerns about the high industrial electricity prices in Germany and the lack of adequate education skills among school leavers.

Fahimi emphasised the importance of addressing high industrial electricity prices to secure Germany's industrial future. She warned that without a reduction in these prices, important industrial cores in sectors such as steel, auto, and chemical could be affected, leading to economic damage that may never be recovered.

The Green Party chair's concern is not limited to these industries but could potentially affect other sectors as well. Fahimi highlighted potential long-term consequences, including increased production costs for German manufacturers, loss of international competitiveness, and possible offshore relocation of industries.

Fahimi proposed industrial electricity price regulation as a means to prevent the potential loss of these industrial cores. However, she noted that no majority support exists for state regulation of industrial electricity prices at present.

In addition to industrial electricity price regulation, Fahimi advocated for the improvement of the education system. She considered the fact that one in four school leavers has insufficient basic skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic a "social scandal of the first order" and counterproductive for securing Germany's future.

Fahimi's suggestions for improving the education system include a combination of measures such as reforming the education system, expanding and accelerating renewable energy to stabilise and potentially lower costs long-term, strengthening policies that support both climate targets and economic viability, and enhancing energy efficiency measures and infrastructure investments.

Fahimi's statements underscore the need for a reliable and market-based corridor for electricity prices, guaranteed until at least 2030. The chancellor proposed the state taking over network charges last year, a relief measure welcomed by Fahimi.

By 2025, there will be three million young people without training in the labor market, according to Fahimi. She suggested that improving the education system is a crucial step in securing prosperity for Germany.

The SPD calls for substantial economic aid, but this is not related to the earlier mentioned facts. As the chair of the DGB, Fahimi's focus remains on addressing high industrial electricity prices and improving the education system to secure Germany's future.

The chair of the German Trade Union Confederation, Yasmin Fahimi, emphasized the importance of addressing high industrial electricity prices to secure Germany's future in various sectors, including steel, auto, and chemical, due to potential economic damage that may never be recovered. Fahimi also advocated for the improvement of the education system, considering the insufficient basic skills among one in four school leavers a "social scandal of the first order" and counterproductive for securing Germany's future.
