Indonesia Launches Geothermal Excellence Centre, Aims to Boost Clean Energy
Indonesia, now the world's second-largest geothermal power producer, has taken a significant step towards a sustainable energy future. The Indonesia International Geothermal Congress and Expo (IIGCE) 2025, held recently, marked the launch of the Indonesia Geothermal Excellence Centre. The event attracted over 150 companies and delegates from 22 countries, showcasing Indonesia's commitment to clean energy transition and geothermal energy as its backbone.
Geothermal energy, the only renewable source capable of operating continuously with a capacity factor exceeding 90%, is crucial for Indonesia's energy mix. The country's installed geothermal capacity stands at 2,744 MW, trailing only the U.S. with 3,937 MW. However, Indonesia's total geothermal potential and reserves are estimated at a substantial 23,742 MW, indicating vast untapped resources.
The government has developed a full policy package to speed up geothermal development. Indonesia is open to international collaboration, welcoming the exchange of technology, expertise, and best practices. It has sought cooperation with the European Union (EU) to promote the transition to renewable energy, with a focus on securing critical raw materials like nickel essential for energy transition technologies.
The IIGCE 2025 launch of the Indonesia Geothermal Excellence Centre signals Indonesia's determination to harness its geothermal potential. With international support and collaboration, Indonesia aims to further boost its geothermal capacity, solidifying its position as a global leader in sustainable energy.
