IndiGo Restarts Flights to China After 5-Year Gap, Boosting Tourism and Trade

IndiGo has restarted flight services to China after a gap of over five years. The first destination is Guangzhou, with daily non-stop flights from Kolkata commencing on October 26. This move follows recent diplomatic engagements and aims to boost tourism and re-establish cross-border trade and business partnerships.

IndiGo previously operated flights to China and has existing arrangements with local partners, facilitating a smooth resumption. The decision comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to China last month for the SCO summit. During the visit, PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed strengthening trade ties and agreed to act as development partners.

The resumption of flights is expected to significantly improve connectivity between the two countries. Despite being India's biggest bilateral trade partner, there have been no direct passenger flights between India and China since 2020. Aviation and trade experts believe the resumption will support businesses and facilitate cultural and tourism exchanges. IndiGo plans to start direct flights between Delhi and Guangzhou in the coming months, subject to regulatory approvals. This move follows the confirmation by India's Ministry of External Affairs to restart direct flights between designated cities in both countries this month.

IndiGo's resumption of flight services to China is a significant step in re-establishing cross-border ties. The first flight from Kolkata to Guangzhou on October 26 marks the beginning of improved connectivity, which is expected to boost tourism and trade between the two countries.
