Cheers to the Independent Spirit: National Freelance Workers' Day
Independence Day for Self-Employed Workers - Celebrated on August 16, 2024
Mark your calendars for August 16! It's time to honor the hustle, grit, and freedom embodied by us, the freelancers, independent contractors, small business owners, and all those who dare to work for themselves. In an era dominated by full-time jobs, we're shaking things up and making our mark on the world, one project at a time. It's high time we got the recognition we deserve!
Origins of the Self-Employed Revolution
Whether you're a medieval mercenary warrior, or a modern-day digital nomad, we've come a long way since the 1800s. Coined by Sir Walter Scott in Ivanhoe, the term "freelancer" once referred to a warrior without a lord, a lance not yet committed to a single cause. Today, we've reclaimed this title as a badge of honor, embodying the spirit of self-reliance and independence that are the hallmarks of American values.
In the United States, our ranks span across ages and backgrounds, united by a common thirst for freedom and the opportunity to create our own destinies. As a community, we contribute trillions to the U.S. economy, making us a powerful and evolving force in the workforce.
Birth of National Freelance Workers' Day
2024
The idea of a day to celebrate us self-starters was brought to life in 2019 by iPSE-U.S., the American branch of the Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (iPSE), a non-profit organization based in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1999 as the Professional Contractors Group (P.C.G.), iPSE protested the IR35 tax law and grew to represent all freelancers in the U.K. By 2014, they had rebranded to iPSE, representing a whopping 4.3 million self-employed workers in the U.K. Today, they continue their mission to defend, connect, and represent the freelance community across the pond.
