Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) Embraces Smart Technologies for Sustainable Growth

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) continues to revolutionize the electricity and water sector with its smart grid strategy, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to monitor and analyze 15 million data points daily. This cutting-edge approach enables immediate detection and remote repair of faults before they escalate, contributing to the world's lowest electricity customer minutes lost (CML) of 0.94 minutes in 2024.

DEWA's commitment to sustainability is evident in its advanced digital infrastructure and smart systems, which proactively monitor and respond to emergency situations. The authority reported over 7.2 million digital transactions in the first half of 2025 across various platforms, with a 99.5% digital service adoption rate. Transactions can be completed online through DEWA's website and smart app, eliminating the need for in-person visits to Customer Happiness Centres.

DEWA's digital transformation is further enhanced by its collaboration with technology leaders such as Microsoft. This partnership aims to make DEWA the world's first AI-native utility by leveraging AI and cloud solutions to enhance renewable energy integration, optimize grid resilience, and deliver world-class services.

One of DEWA's key solutions is the Al Namoos service, meaning "race winner" in Emirati. This streamlined two-step process provides electricity connections of up to 150 kilowatts within five days for DEWA-accredited consultants and contractors. In 2024, DEWA received 8,241 electricity connection requests through its Al Namoos service. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the MD and CEO of DEWA, attributes the increase in electricity connection requests for commercial projects to Dubai's expanding infrastructure and business-friendly environment.

DEWA's accredited network of consultants and contractors reached 2,123 by the end of 2024. Consultants and contractors can access the second edition of DEWA's Infrastructure NOC Technical Manual and participate in the Soqoor Programme, Marafeq Smart Feature, and OWNEK awareness initiative.

Rashid Bin Humaidan, the Executive Vice President of Distribution Power at DEWA, oversees these operations. DEWA's strategic approach to digital transformation underscores its role as a global leader in applying smart and innovative technologies for efficient, sustainable electricity and water service access in Dubai.

As DEWA continues to grow and adapt to the increasing demand for electricity connections, its commitment to providing smart and innovative solutions for rapid and efficient service access while adhering to international standards remains unwavering. The continued growth in service requests underscores DEWA's crucial role in supporting Dubai's economic expansion and fostering a more efficient and sustainable business ecosystem.
