In 2025, there has been a significant increase in wrench attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders, with reported incidents potentially doubling the worst year on record (2021) when 36 attacks were documented. These attacks involve the use of physical force, threats, kidnappings, and extortion to steal crypto assets directly from victims.

This sharp rise in wrench attacks correlates strongly with Bitcoin's soaring price, which reached new all-time highs of over $122,000 to $123,000 in early July 2025. The surge in Bitcoin’s market value has spurred opportunistic physical attacks, as high-value crypto holdings attract violent criminals.

The Asia-Pacific region, particularly countries like Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, is particularly impacted. The Philippines notably faces kidnapping and physical assaults accompanying these attacks.

To combat this rising threat, crypto holders should consider several operational and physical security measures. These include keeping crypto holdings private, improving operational security (OpSec), traditional personal security, physical vigilance, and using self-custody wallets cautiously. High-value holders may need to hire professional security or consider additional physical protections for themselves and their families.

While wrench attacks remain relatively rare compared to cybercrime, their physical, often severe nature magnifies their human impact, making proactive protection essential. Chainalysis and crypto security experts have well-documented this concerning pattern, highlighting a potential long-term security issue as Bitcoin prices rise in 2025.

The increasing number of wrench attacks on crypto holders in 2025 corresponds with the rise in Bitcoin prices, emphasizing the need for heightened security in the finance sector, particularly in regions like Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. To mitigate these physical threats, crypto owners are advised to implement safety measures such as maintaining privacy, improving operational security (OpSec), employing traditional personal security, exercising physical vigilance, and using self-custody wallets judiciously, while high-value holders might require professional security or additional physical protections. Moreover, experts like Chainalysis have voiced concerns about the potential long-term security issues associated with rising Bitcoin prices in 2025.
