Multitudes of Danish positions hang in the balance following Donald Trump's declaration of extensive tariffs on goods imported from various global entities, notably China and the European Union, on Wednesday.

Donald Trump's recently announced sweeping tariffs on imports from various countries, including China and the European Union, have sent shivers down the spine of thousands of Danish workers.

On "Liberation Day", Trump unleashed stinging tariffs on major trade partners, with a whopping 20% slapped on European Union imports. Previously, Trump had imposed tariffs on steel, aluminum, cars, and auto parts, too.

The European Union and China have promised swift retaliation against these levies. On hearing the news, EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen called the tariffs a "major blow to the world economy" and hinted at more countermeasures.

In Danish terms, the C25 index, which represents the 25 most traded Danish stocks, dropped by around 2.4% as of 9:45am.

Adding fuel to the fire, Danish labor experts estimate that as many as 13,000 jobs could be lost due to Trump’s tariffs. The Confederation of Danish Industry (Dansk Industri, DI) estimates that the tariffs will decrease Denmark's gross domestic product (GDP) by a staggering 38 billion kroner.

Aside from these direct impacts, other countries' trades with Danish companies will also suffer due to the tariffs.

In response, DI Director Lars Sandahl condemned Trump's actions in a statement, calling it "a sad day" and suggesting that Europe should respond decisively and appropriately to the announcement from the Trump administration.

Sandahl criticized the US President for jeopardizing the world's engine of growth and prosperity since everyone stands to lose in a trade war. Denmark exported goods worth 248 billion kroner to the US in 2024, representing more than one-fifth of Denmark's total goods exports.

The CEO of the Danish Chamber of Commerce, Brian Mikkelsen, echoed Sandahl's concerns in a statement, warning that high tariffs in the long term lead to inflation, reduced purchasing power, and lowered productivity.

Danish politicians have also criticized Trump’s tariffs, with business minister Morten Bødskov telling news wire Ritzau that the move would have consequences for both Danish consumers and businesses.

The EU, according to Bødskov, already applies a 39% tax on US goods, whereas the US plans to impose a 20% tariff. However, these numbers are misleading since they fail to account for value-added tax (VAT) that is shared among consumers, businesses, and companies operating in Europe.

Bødskov staunchly opposed the prospect of the EU's retaliation as an escalation of the trade war, stressing that everyone must do their best to prevent this from escalating to avoid higher prices, inflation, and tougher business conditions.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen described the new measures as a threat to global prosperity. Despite the grim outlook, he remained hopeful for the future, emphasizing that global trade has paved the way to improved living conditions, reduced poverty rates, and increased lifespans.
