Ahead of Schedule: Dresden's Carolabrücke Demolition Progressing Swiftly
Accelerated Closing of the Carol Bridge Before Anticipated Date - Imminent Early Demolition of Carolabrücke Could Accelerate
Curious about the Carolabrücke demolition in Dresden? Things are moving faster than planned. Here's the lowdown on the situation.
The debris of the collapsed section of the Carolabrücke can be dismantled earlier than anticipated. As reported by city officials, the White Fleet of Saxony GmbH won't pass under the Elbe crossing during its fleet parade on Thursday, meaning the demolition work interruption on bridge section C, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, is no longer necessary.
Not to worry about the remaining visually intact bridge sections – the structural health monitoring system, keeping an eye on the bridge's stability since the collapse, hasn't detected any critical vibrations. As of Wednesday morning, 38 to 50-ton heavy excavators have been summoned to tackle the hanging middle parts of the destroyed bridge section, which are strategically located on a pillar with the superstructures of sections A and B.
Once the remains of C are demolished, the waste will be cleared out. Beginning next week, the removal process will start from both sides, targeting the cantilever arm and the deck of the hollow box section. Followed by the walkways and floor plates, the debris will be crushed, and the material will be reused later on. Over on the other bridge sections, handrails and tram overhead line masts will be taken down and secured. Construction of auxiliary structures to support the land-based bridge sections is ongoing.
Remember the unexpected western traffic lane collapse back in September 2024? The structure, dating back to GDR times, has since been closed and is precariously balanced due to additional breaks in its prestressed steel construction. The city council is planning a replacement for the Carolabrücke before summer, with a focus on a prompt and contemporary restoration of the Elbe crossing[3].
Stay tuned for further updates on the Carolabrücke demolition!

The demolition of the Carolabrücke in Dresden, though advanced, has an unexpected connection with the world of marine transportation, specifically the White Fleet of Saxony GmbH's fleet parade. Originally, the White Fleet was expected to pass under the Elbe crossing during their parade this Thursday, but since the demolition work on bridge section C is no longer necessary, it provides an opportunity in the industry to invest in sustainable finance, potentially funding projects that prioritize less shipwrecks and the preservation of historic landmarks.
