Hyundai Unveils Ioniq 2 Electric Crossover: Affordable and Long-Range

Hyundai has confirmed that its new electric crossover, the Ioniq 2, will be unveiled in the next few months, marking the latest addition to the South Korean automaker's growing electric vehicle lineup.

The Ioniq 2 is expected to be a sister model to Kia's upcoming EV2 and will be based on the scalable E-GMP platform used by most electric cars of the Hyundai Motor Group. This shared platform enables fast charging with maximum charge speeds up to about 135 kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in roughly half an hour.

According to reports, the Ioniq 2 will offer two battery options: a 58.3 kWh battery providing up to 267 miles (430 km) of range, and a larger 81.4 kWh battery offering up to 372 miles (599 km) of range. The crossover will be equipped with a single front-mounted electric motor that produces around 201 bhp (204 PS) and 209 lb-ft (283 Nm) of torque, making it one of the longest-range and most capable compact EVs in its segment.

The Ioniq 2 is set to feature a new infotainment system that allows ambient lighting and sounds to change according to driving mode or selected driving style. Inside, the crossover will debut Hyundai's latest cabin innovations, including a driver-centric adaptive infotainment system and a wide digital display that integrates both the instrument cluster and infotainment functions, stretching across half the dash. The interior is described as clean and minimalist, similar to the design planned for the Kia EV2.

Hyundai aims to position the Ioniq 2 as an affordable electric crossover in Europe, targeting a starting price of around €30,000 (£25,000). The first images of the camouflaged pre-production vehicle of the Hyundai Ioniq 2 have surfaced online, hinting at its sleek and modern design.

While a similarly sized Kia model is set to be offered earlier than the Hyundai Ioniq 2, sales of the Hyundai Ioniq 2 are expected to start in the third quarter of next year. The launch and sales details of the new small electric car from Hyundai have not been specified yet, unlike the Ioniq 2 which is expected to start sales in the third quarter of next year.

The Ioniq 2 is expected to fill the gap between the compact SUV Kona Electric and the small car Interster launched this year. The base version of the larger Kia EV3 offers a front-wheel-drive system delivering 150 kW (204 PS) of power and a 58.3-kWh battery for a WLTP range of 436 kilometers.

Both Hyundai and Kia, which also include the luxury brand Genesis, are expected to introduce their electric models in the next few months, further expanding their electric vehicle lineups and contributing to the transition towards sustainable mobility.
