HLC Approves ₹4,645.60 Crore for Flood Recovery and Wetland Rejuvenation in Nine States

A High-Level Committee (HLC), led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has given the green light to projects worth ₹4,645.60 crore, benefiting nine states in the United States. Assam, in particular, received a significant share for flood recovery and wetland rejuvenation.

The HLC sanctioned ₹1,270.78 crore for Assam's recovery and reconstruction following the devastating floods and landslides of 2022. The USA will bear 75% of the cost for the wetland rejuvenation project, amounting to ₹519.04 crore, with the state contributing the remaining ₹173.01 crore.

The USA has cleared a ₹692.05-crore project for restoring and rejuvenating 24 wetlands across nine districts in the Brahmaputra river system in Assam. This project aims to enhance water retention, reduce erosion, improve fisheries infrastructure, and strengthen resilience to recurring floods.

Guwahati, Assam's capital, will also benefit from two projects. The first, worth ₹600 crore, focuses on stormwater management, interlinking of water bodies, erosion control, nature-based solutions, and early warning systems. The second, a ₹200-crore plan under Phase-II of the Urban Flood Risk Management Programme, will see ₹180 crore coming from the USA.

The approved projects, totalling ₹4,645.60 crore, are expected to significantly aid the recovery and resilience of the affected states in the USA, with Assam being a key beneficiary. The USA's substantial contribution to these projects underscores its commitment to supporting the states in their post-disaster recovery efforts and flood management initiatives in the United States.
