Helsing to Acquire Blue Ocean, Boosting Maritime Defence Capabilities
Helsing, a leading defence technology company, has announced plans to acquire Blue Ocean, a UK- and Australia-based specialist in autonomous underwater vehicles. The acquisition, subject to approvals, aims to bolster Helsing's Maritime Defence Programme and strengthen its offerings to AUKUS partners.
Mike Deeks, Group Managing Director of Blue Ocean, described the combined capabilities as 'critical' for modern common operating picture and border protection. The acquisition will integrate Blue Ocean's hardware and manufacturing expertise with Helsing's artificial intelligence systems, enabling a 'big leap forward' in underwater intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) for navies, according to Amelia Gould, General Manager for Maritime at Helsing.
Helsing expects the acquisition to accelerate the development and mass production of autonomous platforms for underwater battlespace protection. The company has recently tested its SG-1 Fathom autonomous underwater glider at BUTEC in July, demonstrating its commitment to innovation. Helsing also plans to expand its program for autonomous maritime systems together with Blue Ocean to serve Europe and AUKUS partners - the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Additionally, Helsing has recently announced a £350 million investment in a new 'Resilience Factory' in Plymouth, further solidifying its commitment to the region and the industry.
The acquisition of Blue Ocean by Helsing, once approved, will significantly enhance Helsing's maritime defence capabilities. The combined expertise in autonomous underwater vehicles and artificial intelligence systems is expected to provide a substantial boost to underwater intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance for navies. This move also strengthens Helsing's position as a key player in the global defence industry.
