Helderburg Revives Classic Land Rover Defender Legacy with Handcrafted Restorations

Helderburg, a specialist Land Rover restorer based in Sharon Springs, New York, is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the original Land Rover Defender. Founded by Kevin Hendricks in 2019, the company treats each project as an 'heirloom', aiming to create vehicles that clients will pass down to future generations.

Helderburg focuses on Solihull-built left-hand drive Defenders produced between 1993 and 1997. The process involves extensive collaboration with clients, much like a tailor fitting someone for a suit. Despite other specialists opting for American V8s or electric powertrains, Helderburg remains committed to using diesel engines in their restorations.

The original Land Rover, revealed in 1948, was a rugged utility vehicle designed for British farmers in the post-war era. It was rudimentary yet practical, with a war-surplus aluminum body and all-wheel drive. Today, Helderburg honors this heritage by building Defenders by hand, with each vehicle taking around 3,000 hours to complete and given a unique name.

The new Defender (L663 model), introduced in 2020, has proven to be a successful successor to the original. Yet, for those who prefer the classic design and want to keep the faith, Helderburg offers a range of services from restoration to electrification, ensuring the spirit of the original Land Rover lives on.
