Gordon & MacPhail Unveils 85-Year-Old Scotch, World's Oldest Bottled Single Malt

Gordon Ramsay has unveiled Artistry in Oak, an 85-year-old Scotch whisky, setting a new record for the oldest bottled single malt. Only 125 bottles exist, with one earmarked for charity and the rest priced at £125,000 ($170,000) each.

The whisky's journey began on February 3, 1940, when Gordon & MacPhail filled 15 first-fill sherry butts with newmake spirit at Glenlivet distillery. One of these butts has now yielded the oldest Scotch whisky ever bottled, while another has surpassed it, resulting in Artistry in Oak.

Gordon & MacPhail's appreciation for hyper-aged malts dates back to 1933, when George Urquhart started his career alongside his father, John. Despite World War II challenges, including reduced barley supply and uncertain political climate, they laid down spirit for long-term aging. The new record-holder, Artistry in Oak, surpasses the previous record of 84 years held by an 84-year-old Macallan released in 2024.

Artistry in Oak offers a profile of varnished oak and worn leather, with surprising vibrancy and sweetness for its age, and an inherent smokiness reminiscent of the coal-fired environment of Speyside in 1940. It is presented in a vessel designed by Jeanne Gang, suspending the whisky in twisted bronze stems and echoing an oak tree encasing a piece of amber. Artistry in Oak will be available globally for an RRP of £125,000 ($170,000) per bottle.

Artistry in Oak is one of the most expensive single malt whiskies ever on the primary market. With only 124 bottles for sale at £125,000 ($170,000) each and one for charity, this rare whisky commemorates Gordon & MacPhail's 130-year history and their commitment to exceptional cask management.
