OpenAI, the san Francisco-based artificial intelligence (AI) research company, has expressed its intent to purchase Google's Chrome browser if a court orders the tech behemoth to sell it. This revelation came forth during a high-profile antitrust trial, where the U.S. government is pushing for changes in Google's business practices.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Nick Turley, OpenAI's ChatGPT chief, stated this during a court hearing on Tuesday. When asked if OpenAI would attempt to purchase Chrome if it becomes available, Turley responded affirmatively, stating, "Yes, we would, as would many other parties."
The trial forms part of a three-week hearing aimed at deciding what actions Alphabet Inc's Google must take following its guilty verdict for holding a monopoly in the search market. Judge Amit Mehta is expected to deliver a final decision by August. Among the changes suggested by the Justice Department is that Google should be forced to sell its Chrome browser.
Integrating ChatGPT into Chrome's browser could significantly improve the overall user experience, according to Turley. He stated, "You could offer a really incredible experience" if ChatGPT was integrated into Chrome. With such integration, OpenAI would "have the ability to introduce users into what an AI-first experience looks like."
Currently, OpenAI's ChatGPT extension is available for download in the Chrome browser. However, Turley emphasized that owning Chrome or having deeper access to it would be beneficial, as it could provide real-time web data, which could enhance AI training and functionality.
Gaining access to a broader user base has been one of OpenAI's primary challenges. While ChatGPT has been integrated into Apple's iPhones, negotiations with Android phone makers have been less successful. In contrast, Google has been paying Samsung to pre-install its Gemini AI app on Samsung phones, which has hindered OpenAI's progress in negotiations with the tech company.
Launched in November 2022, ChatGPT quickly became one of the fastest-growing software products ever. As of February this year, OpenAI reported over 400 million weekly active users.
