Germany's Water Cent Expansion: Bavaria Joins in 2026
Germany is set to see more of its federal states introducing a 'water cent' for groundwater extraction, with Bavaria planning to do so from July 2026. This fee, already in place in several states, will fund water protection initiatives.
The water cent varies in amount across federal states. Bavaria will join the likes of Baden-Württemberg (since 1988), Berlin (since 1989), Hamburg (since 1989), and Saxony-Anhalt (since 2011) in implementing this charge. Additionally, five other states - Bavaria, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony, and nine more - have already introduced the water cent, although specific dates for each are not available.
With Bavaria's planned introduction in 2026, more than half of Germany's federal states will have a water cent. Revenues generated will support crucial water protection measures across the country.
