Germany's Massive Hotel, Restaurant Raids Uncover 2,200 Potential Labor Violations

On Friday, September 19, 2025, German customs authorities conducted a nationwide inspection campaign in the hotel and restaurant sector. Around 2,600 customs employees surveyed over 5,200 workers and inspected over 430 business records. The operation, led by the Financial Control of Undeclared Work (FKS), involved other authorities and focused on potential violations such as withholding social security contributions and minimum wage compliance.

The inspections were risk-oriented, with both spot checks and full inspections carried out. Preliminary findings indicate possible violations in around 2,200 cases. This includes over 400 cases of withholding social security contributions, around 450 cases of foreign employment, and nearly 600 cases of minimum wage compliance. On-site, customs officers initiated around 370 criminal and nearly 800 administrative offense proceedings.

In particularly affected sectors, the FKS regularly conducts nationwide and regional focus inspections with increased personnel. Nearly 200 criminal cases involved procedures for staying without a residence permit.

Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil stressed the importance of operations like these for enforcing the rule of law and protecting workers from exploitation. The inspections highlight the commitment to ensuring fair labor practices and preventing the undercutting of wages in the hotel and catering industry.
