Germany's Fruit Juice Consumption Stable Despite Industry Challenges

Despite expectations, juice consumption in Germany only slightly decreased in 2024, with per capita consumption dropping from 26 to 24 litres. However, the industry faces challenges due to rising raw material costs and tariffs.

The citrus disease 'Greening' has driven up prices for orange juice concentrate. Meanwhile, tariffs ranging from 8 to 16% on imported juice are further exacerbating price increases and could lead to shortages. The Association of the German Fruit Juice Industry (VdF) has called for the abolition of these tariffs to hinder global trade and ultimately burden the end consumer.

Juice consumption decreased by 2.6 litres per capita, while citrus nectars, grape juice, and vegetable juices increased. However, 100% juice consumption decreased by 2.5 litres per capita, but nectars increased by 0.5 litres per capita. Late frosts on apples and rhubarb, along with pineapple shortages due to climate phenomena in Thailand and Costa Rica, have contributed to lower yields and increased pressure on manufacturers. The short supply of pineapple has led to increased procurement costs for direct juice.

While juice consumption in Germany has only slightly decreased, the industry is grappling with rising prices due to disease, tariffs, and climate-related supply issues. The VdF calls for the abolition of tariffs to ease the burden on consumers and maintain global trade.
