German Parents Eligible for Extra Child Benefit After Court Ruling
Parents in Germany may be entitled to additional child benefit due to a recent ruling by the Federal Finance Court. The court clarified the rules surrounding the end of child benefit payments, which could see parents receive extra months of support.
Previously, child benefit often stopped once students finished their last exam or submitted their thesis. However, the Federal Finance Court ruled on 7 July 2021 that this is not legally correct. Instead, child benefit must continue to be paid until the child receives written notification of their final exam results. This means parents could be eligible for additional months of child benefit.
The ruling provides a clear legal basis for parents to secure extra payments. The court specified that the benefit is paid until the last day of the month when the official notification is received. This change could significantly impact parents, especially those with children nearing the end of their studies.
The Federal Finance Court's decision has clarified the rules surrounding the end of child benefit payments. Parents can now claim additional months of support if there is a delay between their child's last exam and the written notification of results. This change could see an extra 500 million euros in child benefit go to families each year.
