German Companies Embrace Career Gaps, Valuing Soft Skills
In a shift in hiring practices, career gaps are no longer automatic red flags for German companies. Instead, they are inviting a closer look, with soft skills like adaptability and willingness to learn taking centre stage.
The Sparkassen Personalberatung GmbH, an independent company since January 2024 and part of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, has observed this trend. They note that the proportion of résumés with career gaps of over six months has risen from 28% in 2022 to 38% in 2025.
During job interviews, candidates with career gaps are urged to present their story confidently and highlight their soft skills. Open communication about these gaps is key, as is demonstrating concrete added value and acting confidently. Non-linear biographies, such as those of international specialists, career changers, or returnees after illness, often bring valuable skills and are increasingly sought after in a working world demanding change and flexibility. By 2025, career gaps of 12 months or more are expected to affect 30% of résumés in Germany.
In this evolving job market, career gaps are no longer barriers to employment. Instead, they present opportunities for candidates to showcase their adaptability, willingness to learn, and unique skills. Companies are increasingly recognising the value of untypical biographies.
