In the heart of Lower Saxony, Germany, the city of Melle is witnessing a significant development as part of the THW (Technisches Hilfswerk) construction program 2020-2030. This project, located in the industrial area "In der Euer Heide" in Bakum, will serve as an operational base for aid in the country.

The ceremony to mark the beginning of construction was attended by several dignitaries, including Jutta Dettmann (Mayor of the city of Melle), Marco Plesner (THW local representative Melle), Dierk Hansen (THW vice-president), Georg Zeisberg (Department head at the Federal Office for Building and Property), and Julia Kolk (State Building Management Lower Saxony - Region North-West).

Marco Plesner, the Meller THW local representative, expressed his joy about the new THW building in Bakum, emphasizing the importance of equipping disaster protection actors appropriately in today's time. District councilor Malte Stakowski echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of the project in the context of the Christmas floods of 2023, during which the THW demonstrated its reliability in Melle.

The new construction will span approximately 1,000 square meters and will include a hall with 14 parking spaces. The technical Zug with its specialist groups and the specialist Zug Führung and Communication will find sufficient space in the new THW building.

Andreas Isenbeck, from the construction company Goldbeck, was present at the ceremony. The serial, systematic construction method will allow for the completion of the new THW building in Bakum in less than a year.

Julia Kolk from the State Building Management of Lower Saxony spoke of a strong sign for the THW local association Melle, particularly highlighting the youth work of the local association. The mayor, Jutta Dettmann, values the investment in the THW construction project as a confirmation of the valuable work done by the THW Melle.

The afternoon ended with a snack in the current accommodation, marking the beginning of a new chapter in disaster relief and civil protection efforts in Melle. The new THW building in Bakum is a testament to the commitment of the German federal government to modernize and expand THW facilities across the country, aiming to improve operational capacity and technical facilities for rapid, flexible responses to emergencies.

It is worth noting that up to 200 new accommodations are planned to be created nationwide as part of this program, further enhancing the THW's ability to respond to crises effectively. The Melle project exemplifies this ambition by providing the local THW unit with enhanced operational spaces, modern workshops, and adapted infrastructure to handle new equipment and vehicle fleets.

This project, along with others like it, embodies the goals of the 2020-2030 program to raise readiness and efficiency in disaster management and civil protection throughout Germany. The new THW building in Bakum is not just a structure; it's a symbol of resilience, preparedness, and the collective commitment to protect and serve our communities in times of need.
