Funding of 1.5 million dollars allocated by Environmental Fund for wildlife restoration efforts
The Portuguese government has announced a significant investment of €1.466 million from the Environmental Fund, aimed at supporting wildlife recovery and conservation efforts. This funding will be distributed among several associations dedicated to the cause.
The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro - Quiaios Pole - Terrestrial Fauna has received €69,200, while the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro - CRAS received €133,800. These funds will be used for improvements in physical infrastructures, purchase of medical and scientific equipment, reinforcement of feeding and veterinary care, and modernization of monitoring systems.
The Portuguese Society for Wildlife - Quiaios Pole - Marine and Aquatic Fauna received €63,300, and the Amigos Picudos - Association for the Protection of Hedgehogs received €52,900. The Liga para a Proteção da Natureza - Regional Delegation of Alentejo received €90,200, and the associations ALDEIA - CERVAS and ALDEIA - RIAS, as well as the Portuguese Society for Wildlife each received €135,000 in support.
In addition, the Municipality of Lisbon - LxCRAS received €127,400, and the Municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia - Parque Biológico de Gaia received €119,000.
The funding will also support the recovery and conservation efforts of the CERAS - Centro de Ecologia, Recuperação e Vigilância de Animais Selvagens, which received €336,971.00, the Liga para a Proteção da Natureza, which received €283,742.00, the Associação Alentejana de Defesa do Ambiente, which received €327,994.00, and the Centro de Nacional de Reprodução de Animais Selvagens, which received €517,978.00.
Maria da Graça Carvalho, the Minister of Environment and Energy, stated that these centers are the most direct face of our responsibility for the well-being of wild animals and the conservation of nature. She added that all candidatures were approved, and this financing is part of a call for support for the requalification of these centers.
The exact amount for the additional wildlife recovery centers is not specified in this announcement, but it is known that the Environmental Fund will finance 13 such centers in total. This investment marks a significant step forward in the conservation and recovery of Portugal's wildlife.
