Freiburg Customs Uncover Widespread Labour Law Breaches and Illegal Employment

Customs officials in the Freiburg area have uncovered multiple cases of suspected minimum wage and social security contribution violations, as well as illegal employment of foreigners. Nationwide inspections on 19.09.2025 revealed further instances of labour law breaches and unauthorized employment.

In the Freiburg area, eight cases of suspected minimum wage underpayment and 22 cases of potential social security contribution evasion have been identified. The fight against such 'black work' and illegal employment is crucial for maintaining fair working conditions and protecting state revenues.

In the Offenburger location, several establishments were found employing foreign workers without appropriate residence permits. Notably, an Iraqi employee wanted for location determination and a Turkish employee wanted for arrest were discovered. Additionally, a minor was found to be illegally employed. The investigation into illegal employment of foreigners has 12 active cases in the Freiburg area, with 26 kilograms of shisha tobacco secured.

On 19.09.2025, nationwide inspections were conducted by the Financial Control Schwarzarbeit, involving 55 officials at the Main Customs Office Loerrach across three locations. In the Loerrach location, an employee wanted by the police was found, and three cases of unauthorized employment of workers were discovered. Four cases of violating the immediate notification obligation for employees and four cases of non-compliance with recording working hours were also found. Employers may face charges for aiding and abetting illegal residence and employment of foreigners.

More than 107 personal interviews were conducted during the inspections, leading to at least 63 cases requiring further investigation.

The recent inspections have shed light on numerous labour law violations and illegal employment practices in the Freiburg area and beyond. Authorities are committed to investigating these cases and ensuring fair working conditions for all employees.
