Four local governments launch collective strategy for heat management

Four neighboring municipalities - Rodermark, Rodgau, Muehlheim am Main, and Obertshausen - are uniting forces to launch their municipal heat planning. This joint initiative, officially known as the "Convoy," seeks to exploit synergies, hasten processes, and effectively utilize resources - culminating in bespoke heat plans for each city, customized to the unique local conditions.

Combining Strengths for a Greener Future

The collaboration commenced with the signing of a cooperation agreement among mayors Jörg Rotter (Rodermark), Max Breitenbach (Rodgau), and Manuel Friedrich (Obertshausen), alongside city councilors Andrea Schulner (Rodermark) and Janika Martin (Muehlheim), and city councilors Robert Ahrnt (Rodgau) and Michael Möser (Obertshausen) in Rodgau. A joint technical office will be tendered by May, with the office responsible for gathering data about heat supply and analyzing development prospects.

The initial phases of practical work are set to commence in the fall of 2025, with the project's completion planned for 2027. Despite the joint venture, each municipality will create an independent heat plan tailored to its specific local conditions.

Strategic Foundation for Local Energy Transition

Municipal heat planning serves as a blueprint for the local energy transition, focusing on identifying potential in existing and future heat networks. It aims to guide private households and businesses in transitioning to more sustainable energy supplies, carefully considering the environmental impact.

The Federal Heat Planning Act mandates all small municipalities to submit a heat plan by no later than June 30, 2028. This guideline offers strategic recommendations to politicians, network operators, and citizens; however, it does not prescribe a specific set of actions. The cities of Rodermark, Rodgau, Muehlheim, and Obertshausen aim to spearhead their heat planning initiative using this legislation.
