Get the scoop on how municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate are taking action against climate change and adapting to its effects, thanks to €180 million in funding approved by the state government!

With the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry for the Environment managing a funding program for municipal climate protection, the ministry reports 1,285 unique projects across the state under the flat-rate funding of the Municipal Investment Program for Climate Protection and Innovation (KIPKI). A whopping 78% of these undertakings revolve around climate protection measures, with the remainder focused on adapting to the impacts of climate change.

What exactly are these projects all about? Unsealing, particularly in cities, is a hot topic. Many municipal applications include the installation of photovoltaic systems on public buildings, energy-efficient renovations, fleet conversions, and switching to LED street lighting.

This funding program for climate change prevention also supports projects addressing the consequences of climate change, like unsealing areas and switching tree watering from drinking water to well water. Best of all, municipalities can participate without making a financial contribution, and projects should be completed by mid-2026.

As the summer heatwave shows, sadly, the necessity of investing in climate protection can't be ignored, said Minister Katrin Eder (Greens). It's a vital effort happening mostly at the municipal level.

Beyond the flat-rate €180 million KIPKI funding, based on population size within municipalities, another part of the program comes under the responsibility of the Ministry of Economics. This segment features €60 million in funding for a competition among municipal administrative bodies and private companies.
