Financial Control Unit Nets €20M in Black Work Cases, Fines in 2023

The Financial Control Black Work of the Main Customs Office Potsdam has concluded a successful year in combating illegal employment and black work. In 2023, they detected a higher damage sum of over 20 million euros, with inspections leading to fines and imprisonment totaling 377,741 euros and 24 months respectively, along with warning fines and confiscation orders totaling 530,370 euros.

The unit inspected 595 employers and 6,162 persons, focusing on high-risk sectors such as construction, hotels and restaurants, and building cleaning. Their efforts resulted in 2,128 criminal proceedings and 568 administrative offence proceedings, with an increase in criminal proceedings and a decrease in administrative offence proceedings compared to the previous year. Notably, they concluded 1,580 criminal proceedings and 408 administrative offence proceedings in 2023.

In 2023, the unit specifically targeted the gastronomy, hotel industry, and nail studios sectors due to their high risk for social security offenses and illegal work. They uncovered numerous violations, including unregistered social insurance and illegal stay/work cases among foreigners, particularly Vietnamese nationals in nail studios. The detected damage includes unpaid social security contributions, unpaid contributions to professional associations, improperly received social benefits, and wage discrepancies.

The Financial Control Black Work operates across several districts and cities in Brandenburg, demonstrating a commitment to protecting workers' rights and ensuring fair competition. Their successful 2023 campaign highlights the importance of their work in combating illegal employment and black work, contributing to a fairer and more transparent economy.
