Finance Commissioner Disputes Baseless Debt Accusations, Reiterates Committed Approach to Responsible Financial Governance

Kogi State, Nigeria, has seen a significant improvement in its financial management under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, according to official reports published by the Kogi State Government.

The reports show that debt servicing as a share of total revenue has declined steadily over the past few years. In 2020, debt servicing accounted for 29% of total revenue. This figure dropped to 15% in 2021, 11% in 2022, and 11% in 2023.

Hon. Asiwaju Idris, the Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, attributed this improvement to the responsible management of the state's finances. He reaffirmed that Governor Ododo's administration continues to uphold transparency and accountability by publishing budgets, debt sustainability reports, and citizens' guides on the State's official website.

As at March 31, 2025, the Debt Management Office ranked Kogi as the State with the 5th lowest domestic debt nationwide. This ranking is a testament to the state's prudent debt management strategies.

Hon. Idris also denied a publication alleging that 80% of the State's revenue would be committed to debt servicing over the next three years. He stated that the administration is committed to prudent debt management, improved internally generated revenue, and accountability in the use of public resources.

The focus of the Kogi State Government under Governor Ododo has been on development and social investment, freeing resources from debt servicing. This has provided fiscal space for funding infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other people-centered programs.

The 2024 Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) projects that Kogi State's debt service obligations will remain sustainable up to 2033. Under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, debt servicing has been placed on a sustainable path.

In conclusion, the financial management of Kogi State under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo's leadership has shown a marked improvement. The state's debt service obligations as a share of total revenue are below the 40% international sustainability benchmark, confirming a stable and well-managed debt position.
