Fernewald Wind Farm to Power 43,500 Hesse Homes
A collaborative wind farm project, 'Fernewald', is set to supply clean electricity to around 43,500 households in Hesse. The project, a result of intermunicipal cooperation, aims to strengthen regional value creation and is supported by LEA Hesse.
The wind farm will be built on areas of the municipalities of Fernwald, Buseck, and Giessen, north of Steinbach. The site selection prioritized minimizing impact on valuable and damaged forest areas, with plans for reforestation post-construction. Expert opinions are being finalized, and further implementation steps are being prepared in parallel with the planning process. LEA Hesse supported the municipalities, with 'Lintas Green Energy GmbH' and 'Land+Forst Renewable Energies GmbH' serving as contract partners and project developers. The application for a building permit was submitted in June 2025, with construction expected to begin in 2027. Preparations are underway for the establishment of the operator company, with up to 70% of the shares remaining with the municipalities and regional partners. A short film showcases the cooperation among the three municipalities driving the energy transition forward.
The 'Fernewald' wind farm, a symbol of regional cooperation, is set to significantly contribute to Hesse's renewable energy supply. Once completed, it will power approximately 43,500 households with clean electricity, demonstrating a successful local energy transition.
