Federal Employees Back Harris in 2024, Trump Support Drops

Federal employees in the U.S. have donated a significant amount to major presidential candidates in 2024, with a substantial portion going to Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

Nearly 84% of donations from federal employees went to Vice President Kamala Harris. In contrast, Trump received about $675,000, which is roughly 16% of the total federal employee donations. In 2020, Trump gathered nearly 40% of federal employee donations, indicating a shift in support.

The Treasury Department was the only major agency outside of Defense, Homeland Security, and Transportation to contribute at least one-quarter of its donations to Trump. However, more than 61% of Trump's 2024 donations came from the departments of Defense and Homeland Security. Trump has had an adversarial relationship with the EPA and vowed to eliminate the Education Department, which may influence these donation patterns.

The Education Department had the most one-sided donation breakdown, with all donations going to Harris. Kamala Harris has raised about $3.5 million from federal workers at cabinet-level agencies since she entered the race. Trump, on the other hand, instituted a hiring freeze at the State Department and referred to it as 'the Deep State' Department, which might have impacted donations from that agency.

Federal employees' donations to major presidential candidates in 2024 show a clear preference for Vice President Kamala Harris, with former President Donald Trump receiving a smaller but significant portion. The donation patterns reflect the political climate and relationships between the candidates and various federal agencies.
