Financially Struggling Christmas Market Stall Vendors in Magdeburg Seek Compensation
Nation evaluates potential remuneration for firms post assault - Examining Compensation for Businesses Through Estimated Payouts
After the horrific attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg, local merchants are seeking remuneration to cover their losses. The regional Ministry of Economics has received 58 applications for what they call 'fair payments', a spokesperson confirmed. They aim to decide on all applications by the end of August.
These payments include costs such as employee wages, rental fees for stalls or shops in the aftermath of the tragic events on December 20. The exact sum of the compensation will be determined once all applications have been reviewed thoroughly.
Meanwhile, the Magdeburg city council is evaluating financial relief for the affected vendors. This week, several parties tabled a motion urging the city's mayor Simone Borris (independent) to assess appropriate compensations. The initial refund of the proportional stall fee for the eight missed days are deemed insufficient, as per the motion. The economic loss, coincidentally, matches the revenue drop during the Corona pandemic, they argue.
The estimated sales loss for the stall vendors is around two million euros, with the final days of the Christmas market typically being the most lucrative. The motion was filed by, amongst others, the SPD, CDU, FDP, Greens, Volt, Animal Protection Alliance and Animal Protection Party.
