EU's Environmental Policies
On September 12, 2025, Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economics from Baden-Württemberg, attended the Strategic Dialogue of the European Automobile Industry. The event took place amidst a deep crisis in the automobile industry, as Dr. Hoffmeister-Kraut highlighted during her speech.
Dr. Hoffmeister-Kraut praised the innovation coming from the home of the automobile, particularly in electric and hybrid areas, and the integration of future technologies. She emphasised the need for reviewing existing regulations and giving more consideration to transitional technologies like plug-in hybrid vehicles and range extenders.
The Minister renewed her call for the EU to review the blanket ban on internal combustion engines by 2035, arguing that what the industry needs is not more regulation, but the swift implementation of practical, concrete measures. She urged the EU to conduct a reality check, show more pragmatism, and reduce ideology.
The European Union is currently planning to review the ban on new combustion engine cars starting 2035 earlier than initially scheduled, due to industry concerns and technological changes. However, there is no indication that the EU intends to abolish the ban itself at this time.
Dr. Hoffmeister-Kraut expressed her optimism about the innovation capability of the German automobile industry, particularly from exhibitors from Baden-Württemberg. She was optimistic about the signals sent by the International Automobile Exhibition IAA Mobility 2025.
