EU Unveils Affordable Housing Plan to Tackle Crisis
EU Housing Commissioner Dan Jørgensen has announced the launch of the EU Affordable Housing Plan. This initiative aims to tackle the bloc's housing crisis, with measures including curbing real estate speculation and targeting short-term rentals, which are often facilitated by realtors. The plan will be unveiled later this year.
The EU's first-ever housing plan will address the significant rise in housing prices and rental costs. Since 2010, home prices have increased by nearly 60 percent, while rentals have risen by nearly 30 percent. Authorities attribute this spike to the slowdown in public housing construction and an increase in speculative practices, often seen in apartments and car rental services.
To combat this, the plan will revise state aid rules to enable national governments to build homes for middle-class Europeans. Public funds will be combined with private investment to facilitate the construction of affordable homes. Additionally, the plan will include measures to curb real estate speculation and target short-term rentals, which are seen as major factors in rising housing costs. Some areas are even considering bans on short-term rental properties, often managed by realtors.
The EU Affordable Housing Plan, set to be unveiled later this year, promises a multi-faceted approach to addressing the bloc's housing crisis. By curbing speculation, targeting short-term rentals, and facilitating the construction of affordable homes, the plan aims to make housing more accessible for Europeans.
