EU Launches Anti-Trust Probe Into SAP's On-Premises ERP Software Aftermarket

The European Commission has launched a formal investigation into SAP, the German software giant, over potential anti-competitive behaviour in the aftermarket for maintenance and support services of its on-premises ERP software across Europe. The probe, which covers the entire European Economic Area, follows concerns that SAP's actions could limit customer choices and drive up costs in the European market.

EU Vice President Teresa Ribera voiced worries about SAP's potential restriction of competition in the aftermarket for ERP maintenance services in Europe. The investigation focuses on SAP's on-premises ERP software, which handles key business functions like finance, HR, and project management. The Commission fears that SAP's actions may make it harder for competitors to offer maintenance and support services, thus reducing options for European customers and potentially increasing costs in the European market.

The Commission has already accepted a preliminary assessment outlining the key facts of the case and the competition concerns. SAP, which also offers cloud-based ERP solutions, can now provide binding commitments to address these issues. Other companies currently compete with SAP in the maintenance and support services market for on-premises ERP software in Europe.

The EU Commission's investigation into SAP's potential anti-competitive behaviour in the aftermarket for on-premises ERP software maintenance and support services in Europe is ongoing. SAP, which offers both on-premises and cloud-based ERP solutions, has the opportunity to submit binding commitments to address the Commission's concerns. The outcome of this investigation may impact the competitive landscape and customer options in the European market for ERP maintenance services.
