Essen's City Council Approves Taxi, Car Rental Fare Changes for 2026
Essen's city council has approved fare changes for taxis and car rentals, effective from 2026. The move aims to balance competition and offset rising costs.
Taxis will see an increase in kilometer rates, with the first two kilometers costing 2.80 euros, the next two at 2.70 euros, and distances over five kilometers at 2.50 euros. The base fare remains 4.40 euros. These changes are set to take effect in 2026.
Car rental services will also introduce a minimum fare starting in 2026. While the exact amount is not yet confirmed, it will be about seven percent lower than the current taxi fare.
The city council's decision to increase taxi fares and introduce a minimum fare for car rentals is designed to ensure fair competition and reflect rising operational costs. The new rates will come into effect in 2026.
