Sarah Koch, the Team Leader, Quarter & City at the Berlin Energy Agency, is spearheading a significant energy renovation project in collaboration with Siemens and the City of Essen.

In this project, Siemens replaced over 3,000 room climate units as part of a comprehensive energy renovation. The aim was to modernise the building's energy systems and reduce carbon emissions. This renovation has resulted in a reduction of CO2 emissions by 2,185 tonnes per year, and a savings of €829,000 in operating costs annually.

The Berlin Energy Agency and Energy Agency.NRW provided initial consultation for the project. A new building management system was implemented to connect the entire system during the energy renovation, and a measurement and metering concept was also put in place.

Institutions and projects that make a significant contribution to the promotion of energy services are eligible for the European Energy Service Awards (EESA), which are presented by the Berlin Energy Agency (BEA) and the European Commission. The City of Essen and the BEA can both be contacted for more information about the project.

The contractor, Siemens, guarantees the savings contractually, and the Energy Saving Company (ESC) provides energy efficiency measures tailored to a building. For more information about the ESC, you can visit their website.

The energy renovation project is a prime example of how collaboration between public and private sectors can lead to significant energy savings and reductions in carbon emissions. It's a model that other cities and organisations can learn from and replicate in their own projects.
