ESD Calls for Comprehensive Social Security Reform for Self-Employed
The European Association of the Self-Employed - Germany e.V. (ESD) has called for a comprehensive reform of social security systems for solo self-employed individuals and small business owners. The association proposes flexible contribution models in health and pension insurance, tailored to actual income and start-up phases. The ESD considers equal social security a prerequisite for bolstering the middle class and encouraging new self-employment.
In a significant move, the ESD supports the upcoming federal government's plans to introduce statutory maternity protection for self-employed women for the first time. This initiative, 'Mutterschutz für Alle!', is expected to be presented on October 9 or 10, 2025. The ESD aims to provide self-employed women with comparable protection during pregnancy and maternity leave as employed mothers currently enjoy.
The ESD also advocates for freedom of choice in old-age provision and protection against old-age poverty. It proposes an insolvency- and attachment-proof minimum security to safeguard self-employed individuals in their later years. The association strives for a socially fair environment that enables self-employed people to achieve financial stability without compromising their entrepreneurial freedom.
The ESD's proposals, including flexible contribution models, maternity protection for self-employed women, and secure old-age provision, aim to create a more supportive environment for solo self-employed individuals and small business owners. These reforms could significantly enhance the middle class and encourage new self-employment, contributing to a stronger economy.
