Equity Markets Surge in May-June, ClearBridge Small Cap Fund Lags
Equity markets staged a remarkable comeback in May and June, following sharp declines in April. This rally was fuelled by retail investors' enthusiasm for high-risk stocks and momentum plays, as well as a surge in trading volume. Meanwhile, ClearBridge Investments' 'ClearBridge Small Cap Growth Strategy' fund posted modest underperformance against the Russell 2000 Growth Index in the second quarter of 2025.
The market rally was characterised by increased interest in lower-quality, non-earning stocks with lower market capitalisation. Retail investors, driving a surge in trading volume, favoured these riskier assets and momentum-driven stocks. This trend contributed to the exceptional stock market recovery seen in the spring.
ClearBridge Investments' 'ClearBridge Small Cap Growth Strategy' fund, however, lagged behind the broader stock market. The fund's performance was modestly below that of the Russell 2000 Growth Index in the second quarter of 2025. Despite this, the fund's specific holdings for the quarter remain unclear, as search results did not provide detailed information on its top five investments.
While equity markets demonstrated strong resilience with a robust recovery in May and June, not all investment strategies fared equally. ClearBridge's Small Cap Growth Strategy fund showed modest underperformance in the second quarter of 2025, with the details of its holdings remaining unknown.
