EPA Expands Online IPM Training, Awards $360K in Grants for Healthier Schools
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is assisting in expanding access to an online Integrated Pest Management (IPM) training program, The Pest Defense for Healthy Schools, with a total of $360,000 awarded to 12 organizations. This includes a grant to the IPM Institute of North America in Milwaukee.
Each organization will receive $30,000 to address environmental justice issues in their communities. Seven of these grants support areas designated as federal Opportunity Zones. The IPM Institute of North America will use its grant to conduct Pest Defense Workshops in Milwaukee Public Schools, aiming to reduce pest complaints and pesticide use by up to 90%.
The EPA's Environmental Justice Small Grants program enables research, education, training, and community-driven solutions. Alongside the grants, five district-wide, in-person workshops and 20 onboarding webinars for individual schools will be held. A monthly newsletter will also be created to build staff capacity and meet Wisconsin's Green and Healthy Schools (GHS) standards.
The EPA's assistance in expanding The Pest Defense for Healthy Schools program, along with the grants awarded, aims to empower communities to tackle local health and environmental issues. This initiative is expected to significantly improve pest management practices in schools, promoting healthier learning environments.
