Headline: MITECO Boosts Funding for Sanitation Networks in Mar Menor Catchment Area

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has updated the budget for the Priority Action Framework for Recovering the Mar Menor (MAPMM) to 675.05 million euros in April 2024. This initiative aims to address the decline of the Murcia lagoon, known as Mar Menor.

The extended municipalities, which include Los Alcázares and San Javier, Cartagena and San Pedro del Pinatar, Torre Pacheco, and La Unión, will receive support for various sanitation projects. Each of these municipalities has been granted 1.5 million euros for their sanitation networks, amounting to a total of 20 million euros.

The actions include the repair or construction of 20,000 meters of sewerage, the construction or renovation of wastewater pumping stations, and the incorporation of photovoltaic energy generation systems. The sanitation networks of the localities near the Mar Menor must be repaired to prevent them from being sources of lagoon pollution.

Six municipalities in the Mar Menor's catchment area - Cartagena, Los Alcázares, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, Torre Pacheco, and Fuente Álamo - have been supported with 20 million euros by MITECO. The municipalities of Murcia and Fuente Álamo have not requested an extension for completing their sanitation network projects. However, six municipalities have been granted a six-month extension to complete projects by March 6, 2026.

MITECO plans to approve a new royal decree by the end of 2025, which includes an additional 20 million euros to enable municipalities to build separate rainwater networks and further strengthen their sanitation networks. The public information period for this new royal decree has already concluded.

In total, the eight councils are planning 52 actions to benefit 225,000 inhabitants of the Mar Menor's catchment area. The source for this information is EFE / ECOticias.com.
