Enhanced commuting options for Porto city.
On the bustling streets of Porto, the much-anticipated festival from June 23 to 24 welcomes a crowd, and this year, the Porto Metro is all set to provide a "super-charged service" starting at 8 pm. With more trains added to all lines, it's gonna be a smoother ride for festival-goers, as per a recent statement by the transport company.
Unfortunately, there'll be a couple of hiccups along the way. For instance, Metro service will be interrupted between Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto on the Luiz I bridge from 11:30 pm to 1 am due to the traditional fireworks display and ensuing chaos on the Douro River banks. Pedestrian traffic on the upper deck of the crossing will also be momentarily closed from noon until 4 am.
Additionally, stops at Jardim do Morro, Aliados, and São Bento metro stations will be off-limits from 12 pm until 4 am. However, rest assured, normal operation on the Yellow Line remains guaranteed, particularly between Hospital de São João and Trindade in Porto and between General Torres and Vila d'Este in Gaia.
To ease the commute during the night and early hours, the city's public transport company (STCP) is rolling out a "nightlife-friendly service." This includes reinforcing main lines leading to the city center, increasing the frequency of buses and large-capacity vehicles, and adjusting timetables to meet passenger demand. Some lines will also end their journeys at strategic points like Rua da Restauração, Trindade, Rua do Bolhão, and Rua Sá da Bandeira.
Certain lines, including 200, 602, and 1M, will end at Rua da Restauração during the festivities. Meanwhile, lines 305, 700, 800, 801, 7M, 8M, and 9M will terminate at Rua Sá da Bandeira, while lines 502, 701, 702, and 5M will end at Bolhão. The terminus of Gaia lines, such as 901, 906, 904, 905, 10M, and 12M, will also change.
Due to traffic constraints, lines 403, 500, 900, and 11M will be suspended from 7 pm. They'll resume normal service the following day, operating on a schedule designed for Sundays and holidays. The trams (lines 1 and 18) will also halt at 7 pm, picking up again at 9 am on the municipal holiday.
The extravagant fireworks display for St. John's night lasts a thrilling 16 minutes and will be divided between the Luiz I and Arrábida bridges. For up-to-the-minute information on Metro service restrictions during the festival night and alternative transport options, it's best to check the official Porto Metro website or announcements from the local transport authority closer to the event. As of now, such specific details are unavailable.
