Extra financing secured for Berlin research projects - Enhanced budget allocated for scientific exploration in Berlin
Berlin Research Projects Secure Substantial Funding Under Excellence Strategy
The Berlin research landscape is set to receive a significant financial boost, with five local projects slated for substantial additional funding under Germany's Excellence Strategy. These projects span topics ranging from mathematics and chronic diseases to artificial intelligence and political science.
Announced by the Joint Science Conference of the federal and state governments and Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär (CSU) in Bonn, a total of 43 university projects in 13 states were selected for extra funding. Out of the 10 projects submitted from Berlin, five have been successful, according to the Senate Administration for Science.
In a statement, Science Senator Ina Czyborra (SPD) emphasized that Berlin remains a hub for elite research, with renowned universities exerting international influence. Among the successful institutions, she specifically highlighted the Free University of Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin, Technical University of Berlin, and Charité University Medicine.
Each project will receive approximately seven million euros annually, starting from January 2026, for a period of seven years. Some sources suggest that the funding may extend "up to ten million euros" annually, although the confirmed average is typically around seven million.
Notable Berlin-based Clusters of Excellence selected for renewed or new funding include MATH+, NeuroCure, SCRIPTS, ImmunoPreCept (an Excellence Cluster at Charité, with participation from Freie Universität Berlin), and the Center for Chiral Electronics (led by Freie Universität Berlin with partners from Halle and Regensburg).
These projects involve major Berlin institutions, such as Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité-Universitätsmedizin. The Max Delbrück Center is also involved in two of the successful clusters.
The funding not only secures Berlin’s position as a hub for cutting-edge research but also strengthens its international reputation and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across mathematics, health sciences, politics, and physics. The selection of these projects reflects a commitment to addressing pressing global challenges through innovative research.
