Encouraging Specialists: Minimizing Small-scale Vegetable Farmers' Exposure to Climate Change Risks, Such as Water Shortage, in Mongolia through Climate Adaptation Techniques (EbA) and Digital Risk Reduction Insurance Strategies
Smallholder vegetable farmers in the Dundgobi and Uvurkhangai provinces of Mongolia are set to receive much-needed support as the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) has announced a new project aimed at reducing their vulnerability to climate change impacts.
The project, which focuses on adapting traditional farming practices to changing climatic conditions in Mongolia, aims to provide technical assistance on reducing smallholder vegetable farmers' vulnerability to climate change impacts. It will do this through a combination of ecosystem-based approaches and innovative digital financial tools.
The initiative incorporates Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) strategies, which leverage natural ecosystems and biodiversity to increase resilience against climate change effects for smallholder vegetable farmers. This approach helps maintain ecosystem services that are vital for agriculture and climate risk reduction.
To mitigate financial risks associated with climate variability and disasters, the project will demonstrate and develop bankable, digital insurance products tailored to smallholder farmers. These insurance solutions are expected to provide farmers with a safety net to sustain their livelihoods.
The project will also explore various technology options for the project in Mongolia, with a focus on demonstrating a bankable technology concept combining solar-powered irrigation and agroforestry for improved water management.
An inception workshop will be held for the project, and an implementation roadmap will be developed. Two scale-up project concepts will be developed as part of the project. Capacity building and training will be provided, and a sustainability financing strategy will be created. A policy and legislative framework for standards will be established.
The deadline for the solicitation of experts for the project is 18th July 2025. The project aims to produce a practical demonstration of EbA measures integrated with digital insurance schemes, enhance adaptive capacities of smallholder vegetable farmers in the targeted Mongolian provinces, and develop bankable models that can be scaled up or replicated to support climate resilience in similar contexts.
Additional information about the project can be found on the UN Global Market Place or the UN website. Non-members can apply to join the CTCN Network to participate in the project.
The project aims to provide a significant boost to the smallholder vegetable farming sector in Mongolia, helping farmers adapt to climate change and secure their livelihoods, all while promoting sustainability and resilience in the face of a changing climate.
- The project, supported by the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), will integrate environmental-science practices like Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) with fintech solutions, such as digital insurance products, to enhance the financial resilience of smallholder vegetable farmers in Mongolia against climate-change impacts.
- To further ensure the sustainability of smallholder vegetable farming in Mongolia, the project will explore, demonstrate, and develop bankable technology concepts that combine solar-powered irrigation and agroforestry for improved water management, financing these initiatives through environmental-science-focused sustainability funding.
- In line with promoting a climate-resilient future, the project aims to create a policy and legislative framework for standards, establishing a policy foundation for the adoption and replication of climate-change adaptation measures in the smallholder vegetable farming industry, including the merger of environmental-science strategies and fintech solutions.
