Emergency investigation involves Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) and Deutsche Transapline Oelleitung (TAL) GmbH due to pipeline leakage by Bayern.
The Technical Relief Organization (THW) is in high demand worldwide for disaster response, and its commitment is evident in the preparations made for potential oil spill emergencies. Last Saturday, over 130 volunteers from THW and employees of TAL came together in the Chiemsee area to practice oil spill containment.
The exercise scenario involved a pipeline leak in the Kufstein area, with the potential oil flow heading towards Chiemsee. To tackle this hypothetical disaster, eight different local associations built various containment basins and a SEPCON (water-oil separation plant) during the exercise.
The SEPCON is a crucial component of THW's arsenal, used to separate oil-water mixtures and secure water. The THW volunteers set up oil barriers over a distance of about two kilometers, ensuring that oil collects on the water surface while water flows underneath. These barriers are floatable and oil-repellent, making them an efficient solution for containing oil spills.
In addition to the traditional methods, a new amphibious vehicle was used during the exercise. This vehicle transports oil booms in the shore area and enables rescue workers to work quickly, easily, and environmentally friendly. This innovative tool allows rescue workers to pump oil off the water surface, further enhancing THW's response capabilities.
The THW is a federally funded operational organization, with a commitment based on over 85,000 volunteers nationwide. Their work includes bilateral aid, EU's civil protection tasks, and tasks on behalf of UN organizations. For more information about THW's commitment, visit www.jetzt.thw.de.
The leadership of the oil spill exercise in Bavaria was under the guidance of Thomas Steif. Although the pipeline has not yet leaked, good preparation ensures readiness for emergencies. The oil spill drill is practiced once a year to optimize the processes between TAL and the THW, ensuring a smooth and effective response in the event of a real disaster.
